The proverbial cat has being thrown among the pigeons in a big weekend of upsets with some defining results. Bassendean, South Perth and Swan will be very disappointed about their results but more so about how other favourable results would of greatly helped their individual causes. Credit to the new form team Mundaring, who have really forced the competition to now take them very seriously, both home and away. That win puts them 1 game behind a clear 2nd spot and they have both 2nd/3rd still to play which will be big double pointers for them. The story of Round 13 is a select few prominent skippers putting in massive performances just when their teams needed them most and at the right time of the season.
Kalamunda knocked off a Swans to leave them 0-3 over the last 3 rounds and really opens up that 5th/6th spot. Cambridge eventually justified the names on the team sheet and proved the talent to match the potential in a huge result at South Perth. Yokine built on the percentage in style and Rossmoyne put together another strong performance against Doubleview.
MUNDARING 79 (5.5) v BASSENDEAN 70 (2.5)
Lynch, John 13 v Revell, Rodney 19
Pickles, Lindsay 16 v O'Sullivan, Eugene 16
Cox, Rex 16 v Krstic, Jovan 22
Bear, Geoffrey 34 v Erceg, Michael 13

Another week and another comfortable 12 shot win for Basso over the first 3 rinks......although someone forgot to give that script to Bear's rink or maybe he got it and inserted it straight into the shredder......what a result, what a performance??!! The ranger was advised of a possible bear mauling on Coolgardie St but arrived too late for Erceg's rink. Upon inspection they'll survive just fine other than minor bruising of pride. What a game to put in such a performance, when the chips were down and everything was on the line.....5 star award to Critchell, Hagdorn, Warne and Bear.
Credit to Basso in much of the performance as Revell came through late to register a fine 6shot win from Lynch and Krstic held Rex to a for most of the game in a fine performance under pressure. Pickles seen the neon lights against O'Sullivan and pushed hard for the win but nobody is getting many numbers off them so shared points was probably a fair result.
This win has propelled Mundaring right into the mix and in that, provided them with more confidence than Don Juan heading into the last 5 games.
Result: Mundaring 5.5 - 2.5 Prediction: Bassendean 7-1

YOKINE 99 (8) v WANNEROO 61 (0)
Coffey, Wayne 31 v Denny, Steve 14
Morrison, William 25 v Anderson, David 14
Kay, Anthony 21 v Nievelstein, Martin 16
McGillivray, Trevor 22 v Buchholz, Chris 17

The Doggies smelt blood and pounced hard to smash a big 8 pts home earlier in this one sided encounter. These games can turn into a banana skin if you approach them the wrong way but Yokine certainly brought their A game from the start. The Roos probably were forced into the many changes with recent results but it just did not seem to work out well for them at Yokine.
Coffey was great in a huge 17 shot win v Denny, which is no easy feat. Morrison was brilliant against Anderson and really controlled the length and the game all day. Morrison probably has more joy skippering than playing that 3rd slot and this shows in only losing 3 skippering games all season, so can't see a change going forward.
Kay needed to be good today and his rink delivered in style against a very strong rink in Nievelstein. Unsure why C.Tee was playing 3rd but surely it was for good reason given his heroics for most of the season as skipper. In the final game came the No.3 skipper in the comp. McGillivray was solid against a deputing skipper this season in Buchholz. A 5 shot win rounded off a great 8pt win for the Doggies and gives them a real nice look at Mundaring who are only 1pt ahead in 4th spot.
Result: Yokine 8 - 0 Prediction: Yokine 7 - 1

ROSSMOYNE 2 77 (1) v DOUBLEVIEW 89 (7)
Herbert, Allan 12 v Nelson, Gary 31
Beacroft, George 17 v Herriot, Guy 25
Vind, Reza 20 v Johnson, Edward 22
Edson, Keith 28 v Langdon, Winton 11

The River Rats put up another great performance at home and other than a few late shots going against them, they had every right in getting another big scalp at home.
Herbert's rink was quite given their standards and allowed Nelson to maintain his unbeaten skippering form this season with a draw and win to his name. If this game had closed a little late on it might of really made the difference overall. Nelson has inherited a good rink from Tennant whom have dropped very few games so it was never going to be easy. Herriot's rink continued their form in carrying the cans with a great 8 shot win off the in-form Beacroft and really provided that platform to carry the Agg. Vind came very close again to another upset in controlling Johnson and was well within firing range late on but only just got edged.
Credit to the depth of Rossmoyne that they have numerous different skippers putting in big performances weekly and this week was the time for Edson to come back into the fray. His rink put on a huge 17 shot margin on Langdon and with 28 shots puts another big number against home like Erceg the week before. Clearly Rossmoyne have the ability to deliver across all rinks but it is just that lack of consistency that causes much of this season's pain. Doubleview go marching forward to sit a comfortable 3rd and with 3 home games from 5 left, whats not like about their opportunities from here.
Result: Doubleview 7 - 1 Prediction: Doubleview 6 - 2

SOUTH PERTH 75 (3) v CAMBRIDGE 77 (5)
Kelly, Steve 11 v Manning, Wallace 25
Bandy, Denis 19 v Jones, Geoffrey 18
McRae, Michael 22 v Byres, Ashley 12
Roelofs, Bill 23 v Buckley, Stephen 22

It was only a matter of time before someone fell on the Knights sword and it did not look like this Round but Cambridge forced the issue in an epic tussle. With Basso losing at Mundaring this was the opportunity to open the top of the table right up but unfortunately it fell just short for the Millers. Cambridge did what no other team has done all season in keeping South Perth to 75 shots at home so credit across all rinks.
Wallace was superb against Kelly and carried a fair burden of the load in a strong 14 shot win. Wallace held a big lead for much of the game and the more the game went on the more the number stretched out and that in part was due to a solid front end especially Bolton playing very well. They finished well to give the Knights every chance of completing an upset.
Bandy had Jones under wraps for most of the day but Jones rink just held on with enough key bowls especially the last 3 ends to give the others a chance of carrying the Agg and only lost by 1 shot in a tight contest.
McRae was great against a quality Byres outfit that had every opportunity but the Millers just had the better bowls when it counted and gradually edged away to a very nice lead, while keeping Byres to only 12 shots. The final game and the decider was somewhat very different when the cards matched the 2 best skippers.....in came the 2 big hitters in a Roelofs v Buckley special in a high scoring 23-22 slug-fest. This game had it all with some sublime bowls and counter punching from the very 1st end. Bucks gave Roelofs a reasonable lead over the 1st half but always seem to have him on a reasonable leash and came roaring back to completely dominant the 2nd half in a thriller. It was all square going down the last but Roelofs rink dug deep to control the head and post the narrowest of wins even though the Buckley's rink had won the majority of ends throughout the day.
These games generally could swing eitherway but Cambridge had the desire to push this one over the line in a superb all round performance. Hopefully they can build on this to get them out of trouble, as they do not have the worse run home.
Result: Cambridge 5 - 3 Prediction: South Perth 7 - 1

SWAN 84 (3) v KALAMUNDA 85 (5)
Natalotto, Tony 18 v Bartlett, Arthur 14
Park, David 27 v Olive, Wayne 11
Southern, Alan 14 v Gosstray, Stewart 39
Tibbles, George 25 v Cooper, Rodney 21

The Cougars came to play and needed to get something out of this game to get them out of trouble and they delivered with a huge performance. Unsure what is happening at Swan over the last 3 weeks but they will need to pull themselves together soon if they want to see Finals. Although from reports Swans did enough to secure the 7 pts but similar to G.Bear someone forgot to tell S.Gosstray. Gosstray's rink just piled the pressure on from the start and knocked together some big numbers against the Southern rink that rarely gives away much, so that result is extra special. To put 39 shots on the board away from home is incredible and then to carry the Agg by 1 under serious pressure and winning by 25 shots can be those defining moments in a season, well done to Young, McDonald, Cornthwaite and Gosstray.
Across the other 3 rinks Swans were really good against an in-form Kalamunda so plenty of positives to take away from this performance. Natalotto pulled through against Bartlett in an even contest against 2 Top10 skippers, that went down to the last few ends. Bartlett's rink has only lost once to the rampaging Bear since R5 so Natalotto's side had to play very well to carry the win. Park had a huge 16 shot win v Olive in somewhat of a 1 sided contest and controlled the game nicely on the slower greens to make up for some numbers dropped the previous few weeks. Tibbles got over Cooper in a high scoring contest to give the Swans every chance of taking another big home win but credit to the Cougars who had some huge bowls on the last end to snatch 5 very valuable points.
Result: Kalamunda 5 - 3 Prediction: Swan 6 - 2
