Tom Antonio 25 v Charles Slavich 21
Scott Walker 27 v Kyle Mcilroy 11
Ross Bresland 20 v John Slavich 24
Glenn Pauling 30 v Ryan Moyle 9
The highly anticipated Friday night fixture produced a massive surprise result with South Perth dominant for the whole night to win by 37 shots. it was on the back of 2 big wins, Scott Walker beating Kyle Mcilroy by 16 and Glenn Pauling a 21 shot winner over Ryan Moyle.
The night started as a beautiful night for bowls which gradually got colder, but the talk was the controversy surrounding the unavailability of 2 South Perth players and them playing in the Saturday fixture, and then their subsequent banishment. But it did not detract from the quality of bowls put on display from last years grand final teams. South in this game able to reverse the tables from the final last year.
New skipper Tom Antonio started his PL career with a win, a slugfest but a tight finish to win by 4 over Charlie Slavich and it was John who won the point for Doubleview with his 4 shot win over Ross Bresland.
I hope we continue to play Friday night games, Premier League competition is out highest competition in the metro area and our best bowlers are on display. I'm hoping the dramas of the past weekend do not change clubs and our administrators from this path that we are heading down.
NORTH BEACH 101 (7) v MOSMAN PARK 66 (1)
Mark Douthie 29 v Patrick Daley 17
Ron Kuziela 32 v Louie Beurteaux 17
Joe McGinlay 22 v Cameron Hoffman 13
Paul Walker 18 v Dale Marsland 19
North Beach have won the battle of the promoted teams and in convincing fashion winning on 3 rinks and a 35 shot margin and rocketed them up the ladder to 5th and only out of the 4 on percentage
The big win was that of Ron Kuziela with his 15 shot win over Louie Beurteaux. The day got off well with a 14-0 start before Beurteaux got on the board but he was never able to really get back in the game and they traded blows until the 1st end. Leader Leo Mola had a very good game. Another rink who shot out of the blocks was that Mark Douthie, when he opened up to a 12-0 lead. But Pat Daley was able to get back into the game, at one stage 12-17 down but Douthie settled and was able to close out the game and win by 12.
These 2 rinks made the going difficult for Mosman Park, always trying to fight back from 20-30 shots down all game. Joe McGinlay winning by 9 in the end, but he was 6-11 down halfway through the game before finding his range, getting in front and going on with it to win. McGinlay bowled well as well as 2nd Peter Retallack.
Mosman Park got a valuable away point when Dale Marsland saluted by 1 over Paul Walker. It was a close tussle all day never more than a few points in it. Walker holding by 1 with an end to play and holding shot but Alek Gryta was able to wrench that away. A draw looked likely but then Marsland who is having a good year able to draw the winner and get the away point.
BASSENDEAN 84 (7) v KARDINYA 53 (1)
Chris Margin 26 v Steven Novak 9
Dan Nicholls 29 v Kevin McKay 10
Simon Alden 19 v Daniel Brown 15
Beau Manton 10 v David Rankin 19
Our game came knowing that Doubleview had lost the night before and we had a chance to win and go clear at the top of the table. Kardinya visiting Bassendean which historically has been a graveyard, and it appeared that way again quite early in the piece. Chris Margin filling in skipping duties for the absent David Rhodes did extremely well against Steve Novak, opening up hard and really never letting go of the throat of Novak to win by 15. 2 rinks away, Dan Nicholls was doing the same thing against Kevin McKay who tried hard all day but the front end for Nicholls was just dominant and crowded the jack all game. A 19 shot win sealed the win for Bassendean, but how much was it going to be.
Beau Manton was having a tough battle against Dave Rankin. I did hear for the first 7 ends the skippers crossed with Bassendean up, but Dave Rankin just loves playing on a quick grass surface and it didn't matter if he needed to draw, play weight or drive, he did it with absolute perfection and after the 7 ends was 9-0 up. It didn't slow down either, Rankin putting on a clinic of skippering duties but Manton able to pull some shots back but Rankin was never going to let this go and he won by 9
My rink playing Daniel Brown was pretty close all day, Brown having his nose in front for most of it, albeit never more than 4-6 shots up most of the day. We won the 14th end and went short and was able to string some ends together to square the ledger to the 19th end. With 2 play we picked up a very handy 3, but on the last end they were holding a very hard to cut down 3 before a double edged bowl from Stein Davies wiggled in for shot. It was hard to get at and 2 drives from Brown unable to dislodge it and we were able to hang on and get the point.
MANNING 92 (7) v OSBORNE PARK 59 (1)
Thomas Mitchell 19 v Gary Caffell 21
Shane Knott 23 v Neville Stevens 11
Lee Such 21 v Cody Packer 13
Anthony Williams 29 v Kevin Pickering 14
Another big game in the scheme of things at the moment and another fairly one sided game by the scores, but according to my source, the game was quite close most of the day and aggregate margin only coming quite late in the game.
Manning started the better team being in front on all 4 rinks but then Osborne Park started to get the shots, but it was Manning who were able to remain in front slightly at the half way mark. Packer started to come back at Lee Such and it was only some crucial bowls at the end from Such which secured a good win for him by 8 shots. Shane knott generally had the better of the Stevens rink, but Stevens himself cutting out many shots but it wasn't enough to get the rink win and winning that battle by 12
Anthony Williams as well having a close battle all day against Kevin Pickering and it was some big bowls late which secured the big 15 shot win. The game was a lot closer than that all game though.
Osborne Park with a vital away point, Gary Caffell and Tom Mitchell having a great tussle all day with Caffell narrowly holding the fort for the match, Caffell again superb as he has been all year to win by 2
WARNBRO 86 (7) v CAMBRIDGE 76 (1)
William Baker 19 v Ross Bolton 24
Kieran Cousens 21 v Pieter Harris 17
Lindsay Strange 25 v Lance Strahan 24
Barry Kalinowsky 21 v Slavko Perica 11
The big surprise was the win to Warnbro. You always felt Warnbro were going to win at home this year, if not 2 or 3 games but it was a surprise to see Cambridge as the vanquished in one of those games. They will welcome back Clive Adams next week in the big game against Bassendean
But on to this game and a great win for Warnbro. Barry Kalinowsky was the big winner, setting it up early in the match with some big bowls and was able to hang on that margin he established early. His rink dominance early meant Warnbro were always 5-10 shots up all day. His teammates around him rallied, Kieran Cousens a four shot winner over Pieter Harris in a game that didn't reach any great heights but it really doesn't how you win games, as long as you win games. Lindsay Strange and Lance Strahan re-creating a game of Twenty20 cricket with a high scoring game that could have gone either way, but it was Strange who had his nose in front after 21 ends to win by 1, 25-24
Cambridge did get a point, usually away wins are vital but against Warnbro they would be disappointed with that sole point. It was replacement skipper Ross Bolton who is now 2 from 2 for the year with his 5 shot win over Bill Baker. Bolton showing that he is an able replacement should be need come again to step up.
