Well it's the end of the year and not quite the halfway mark but in what I thought would be a very close year is already showing signs of knowing who is going to sit where. The surprise packet is Bassendean who sit on top but a huge 16 shots clear of 5th placed Osborne Park. Doubleview only half a point behind and i know it's early and hard to write this without any bias, but anyone would now think that those 2 teams are almost secure in the 4. The form they have both shown would have to see a remarkable about face to see them drop out. South Perth also with a great run sees them 12.5 clear of 5th, and even Manning in 4th are 6 clear. Has our top 4 already been decided? There is a long way to go, still 10 games to be played. At Round 8 last year, 3 of the top 4 teams were in the 4, the team not in therer was Doubleview, who of course went on to win the flag. There were on 32.5 points, almost the same as 5th placed Osborne Park, so all is not lost for our logjam of sides sitting 5th to 8th
At the other end, Mosman Park are starting to lose touch with the 8, they currently sit 7 points shy of 8th placed Cambridge. They have been competitive and taken the scalp of Doubleview, but a loss or 2 two early ob the return of pennants on the 11th and they won't be able to make ground. Warnbro it would appear will go down, but they will want another win or two before they head back to White. The departures in the off season are proving too much to overcome.
OSBORNE PARK 96 (7.5) v MOSMAN PARK 61 (0.5)
Kevin Pickering 24 v Cameron Hoffman 16
Cody Packer 19 v Patrick Daley 19
Gary Caffell 23 v Dale Marsland 13
Neville Stevens 30 v Louie Beurteaux 13
A 35 shot win to Osborne Park probably shows how dominant they were for the day, but 1 rink Mosman Park rink made a game of it, Patrick Daley was all over it early and leading 15-2 before Cody Packer was able to drag himself off the canvas and make some head way and get the draw. Poor old Daley seems to have copped the top rinks of the opposition so far but has acquitted himself well in these games.
The other Osborne Park rinks were just too good. Kevin Pickering and his team a solid 8 shot win over Cam Hoffman, Ryan Brown sounded like he had a good day. Gary Caffell doing what he does best, extremely good and taking the 10 shot win over Dale Marsland, The leaders having a great duel in this game but Caffell proved to be the difference. Neville Stevens and his rink far too good for Louie Beurteaux, a 17 shot win showing his dominance.
MANNING 75 (7) v KARDINYA 59 (1)
Thomas Mitchell 14 v Steven Novak 16
Anthony Williams 16 v Kevin McKay 15
Lee Such 19 v David Rankin 16
Shane Knott 26 v Daniel Brown 12
At the start of the game again we see Mosman Park being ultra competitive, the aggregate was all square after 20 or so ends, Lee Such holding a commanding position over David Rankin 12-1, offset by Steve Novak also dominating Tom Mitchell 11-2 with the other rinks quite even. These rinks then start to close the gap, Rankin winning 7 ends on the trot to hit the front 13-12 and Mitchell also closing the gap, but Shane Knot with a 5 and a 4 opened a game winning break over Daniel Brown.
Heading towards the end of the game, Knott has been able to hold that advantage and eventually wins by 14, a margin that virtually guaranteed the aggregate result as the other games were quite close. The Such/Rankin contest went toe for toe with Such up by 2 going in the last and claims the shot on the last to win by 3. Anthony Williams and Kevin McKay had a great close game all day, all square with 1 to play and it was Williams and his rink who got the shot and the point. Mitchell had fought back well and that game was also square with an end to play. Mitchell holding before Novak kills the end. On the replay again Manning holding sway but a good shot to Novak turned it over to Kardinya, Mitchell unable to connect with his last bowl and Kardinya get a vital point.
SOUTH PERTH 79 (6.5) v WARNBRO 62 (1.5)
Scott Walker 21 v Connor Biddle 17
Justin Opie 31 v Barry Kalinowsky 9
Ross Bresland 12 v Kieran Cousens 21
Glenn Pauling 15 v William Baker 15
Walker v Biddle
The battle of the 2 youngest skippers of their respective sides was close game. Tommy Reid set South Perth well up consistently from the mat, allowing Ash Sharp and Nick Reagan to play confidently and crossing over holding numbers on numerous occasions. Conor Biddle played exceptionally well, often reducing big counts to singles or converting to shot, all while adding well when holding shots himself. A big shot from Scott Walker to make 5 in a pivotal part of the game gave his rink the upper hand, but not before Biddle was able to answer back with two 3s in the space of 3 ends. Walkers rink was hold off Biddle in the final 4 ends to take the win.
Bresland v Cousens
The rink of Kieran Cousens came out firing and found themselves 7-1 up early on before Ross Bresland was able to close the gap. The consistency of the Warnbro rink proved to much in the second half with Cousens playing many telling bowls to lead his rink to the win.
Opie v Kalinowsky
Justin Opie’s rink was outstanding for the whole day. Ken Pride played a near flawless leaders game, confidence was undoubtedly high, and reaches its pinnacle when he drew a front toucher on the normally taboo backhand. Barry Kalinowksy played some good bowls under constant duress, but the relentless pressure from Opie’s rink proved too much in the end.
Pauling v Baker
Game of the day.
Accurate driving was evident in the countless dead ends in the first half of the game. Bill Baker was in top form and the game stayed close for the duration. Glenn Pauling managed to go into the last end holding the slimmest of leads up 16-15. Great bowls from both Derek Angell and Mitch Biglin meant South Perth has 3 bowls within inches of the jack, while Warnbro had committed the cardinal sin of leaving all bowls 3 feet short on the line.
2 misfire drives from Dennis Pattullo meant it was down to the Skip to produce some magic. After missing with his first and South Perth looking likely to hold the rink, Baker played big weight connecting with the front bowls before his bowl continued through to sit the shot bowls for a single and forcing the draw.
Great report from South Perth, summed it up beuatifully without any input from me.
BASSENDEAN 66 (2) v DOUBLEVIEW 70 (6)
Beau Manton 27 v Charles Slavich 14
Simon Alden 16 v Ryan Moyle 14
David Rhodes 14 v John Slavich 18
Dan Nicholls 9 v Kyle Mcilroy 24
The top 2 teams squared off and it was a high quality encounter with Doubleview getting the lions share of points to win 6-2. In reality Doubleview were in front most of the day, but never by more than 10 or 15 shots but enough that when Bassendean pushed, they were able to steady and get back to that gap. The big win came from Kyle McIlroy over Dan Nicholls who has been having a great season. In fact the 8 skippers in this game had taken up positions in the top 12 skippers, so both clubs have been dominant in the skippers across the board. McIlroy with 3rd Stewart Gosstray and second Steve Cerff seemed to be the ones creating headaches all day for Nicholls, his rink not bowling badly but just trumped every time they were able to hold shot. A great game by McIlroy and his rink.
Score wise this was offset by the win to Beau Manton over Charlie Slavich by 13, but most of these shots came at the end when the aggregate seemed out of reach anyway. It was too far away from me to see everything that was happening but Charlie is very hard to secure a win over of any size so this was a good result for Manton and his crew.
The remaing rinks were quite close. Looked like John Slavich and David Rhodes were having a high quality hitout which Slavich able to close out by 4. Myself and Ryan moyle also a good game never more than a few shot advantage to either side. Moyle got to a 4 shot lead with a handful to play before we were able to string the ends together at the end to win by 2, again another good quality game.
Doubleview with the win not able to get on top but they look so strong, the team to beat already in the race for the flag, their third on the trot if they get it. Bassendean at home would have liked the win but they were right in it up to their ears and if you'd told them they would be 6-2 on top, having just lost to Doubleview by 4 shots they would have taken that at the start of the season.
NORTH BEACH 79 (6.5) v CAMBRIDGE 75 (1.5)
Ron Kuziela 10 v Pieter Harris 29
Brad Gillingham 28 v Lance Strahan 12
Geoffrey Devenish 18 v Clive Adams 18
Mark Douthie 23 v Slavko Perica 16
Another close loss to Cambridge and they will be starting to look at what could have been for this seaon, but hats off to North Beach securing a vital win for them to not only keep in touch with the 8 but also put some space to 9th spot currently held by Mosman Park. There were 2 blow out rinks, Pieter Harris up 17-1 early and was able to maintain that margin to win by 19 over Ron Kuziela who seemed unlucky with some shots. Conversely Brad Gillingham who I think was his first game in the PL as skip drew Lance Strahan and got some good numbers early and also able to hold that margin.
Mark Douthie also able to grab some big numbers early against Sam Perica but when Perica looked as though that gap could be bridged, Douthie would then settle and win some more ends. A good 7 shot win to Douthie which in the scheme of things went a long way to securing the aggregate. Clive Adams and Geoff Devenish having a ripper game, Devenish picking up a number early but Adams able to claw his way back in to the game and the draw seemed a fitting result.
