Alcolizer
Game 1 of the season is upon us so time for the previews to commence. In my yearly preview I mentioned there seems to be a top 5 and a bottom 5 this season. As it turns out, they play out that way this round. Will we see the split of teams this early?

MANNING v NORTH BEACH

MANNING
S Knott, M Kemp, N Jones, J Angel
L Grigg, A Heal, S O'Brien, M Ellis
D Trewhella, D Downey, P Ker, M Walker
T Mitchell, S Patterson, W Hyatt, G Quann
INS:
OUTS:

NORTH BEACH
G Devenish, C Margin, M McConnell, J Clayton
M Douthie, G Crosthwaite, T Jones, L Mola
M Sweeney, P Walker, M Sear, G Yabuka
J McGinlay, B Gillingham, S Richards, J Post
INS:
OUTS:

I've had some discussion about North Beach being a possible smoky for the finals this year. With such a distinct home ground advantage all they need is to win some away games and they are a chance. Last year they won 0 away game, so to make an early impression this looks a good chance for them. I don't think they can win though, Manning look too strong especially in the skipper department head to head. I played on the Manning green in the state fours and it was delightful, maybe too friendly which will give North Beach a sniff. A close game but will favour the home team
Manning 7-1

MOSMAN PARK v OSBORNE PARK

MOSMAN PARK
M Cranswick, J Barry, A Mercader, R Kershaw
C Hoffman, A Gryta, M Robertson, T Southern
D Marsland, T Massang, S Swanson, W Tan
A Southern, T Cranswick, S Anning, M Van Bemmel
INS:
OUTS:

OSBORNE PARK
G Caffell, C Biddle, R Lawrence, I Lilburne
C Packer, J East, E Martin, M Rollings
N Stevens, T Weir, M Dewson, S Pasalich
R Brown, S Loftus, K Pickering, G King
INS:
OUTS:

Our champs from last year travel to Mosman Park which contain a couple of new recruits after their promotion from last year and it reads to be a solid enough team. Osborne Park burst out of the gates last year and set their season up perfectly and will be loking to do the same here. The skippers are the same, Shane Loftus comes in and the kids are a year older and wiser. They should be too good here
Osborne Park 7-1

SAFETY BAY v SOUTH PERTH

SAFETY BAY
C Owen, R Kennedy, P Daynes, S Gallon
G Taylor, G Smith, G Hodges, J Hanafee
C Carruthers, S Hide, G Ogg, S Foran
L Piper, R Hall, J Radford, S Mulhall
INS:
OUTS:

SOUTH PERTH
G Pauling, T Alberti, P Davies, D Angell
S Walker, M Biglin, G Reagan, J Galipo
J Opie, T Kinnane, P Holmes, K Pride
L Such, T Antonio, N Griffin, R Havercroft
INS:
OUTS:

New recruit for the Millers Daniel Brown unavailable for this game in a pre-known absence, luckily for them they travel to new team Safety Bay so it won't matter, right. Right? I don't think so, Safety Bay will be a tough nut to crack at home, like North Beach will hold a distinct home ground advantage and will be full of beans to play well. Their rinks had a hitout in the state fours so will be raring to go. They may just fall short but will give a good account of themselves.
South Perth 6-2

CAMBRIDGE v KARDINYA

CAMBRIDGE
C Adams, R Bolton, A Foster, P Potts
B Nairn, D Opie, C Wooldridge, D Leeson
E Johannes, C Harris, N Lewis, L Bolton
S Mawdsley, S Rushforth, N Bolton, G Allen
INS:
OUTS:

KARDINYA
T Krajancic, G White, D Wood, J Terrell
S Novak, B Henley, T Leahy, C Vinci
S Perica, C Stokes, S Vinci, T Cocodis
D Rankin, D Comrie, E Gollan, S West
INS:
OUTS:

This looks to be our game of the round. While I think Kardy will be just off the pace this year they still present as a formidable outfit. My records show Kardinya have won their past 2 at Cambridge so the surface presents no problems to them. The 4 skippers match up well, so it will be a battle of the front end, who can get them closer consistently for longer will decide the winner. The x factor is Eric Johannes. How good is he? Will he be the player to lift the knights into the finals this year? It's a real toss of the coin this game so will go for the home side.
Cambridge 6-2

SORRENTO v DOUBLEVIEW

SORRENTO
C Lander, R Cunningham, P Morgan, G Murray
D Nicholls, A Elmer, P Knight, M Sharrett
R Butler, P Flack, A Walton, M Burton
B Eagles, M Hulbert, G Taylor, F Tyson
INS:
OUTS:

DOUBLEVIEW
J Slavich, S Scott, R Haring, L Thorn
C Slavich, A Williams, R Bates, A Wetzler
K McIlroy, S Gosstray, S Cerff, G Faulkner
R Moyle, B White, B Heta, T Whitfield
INS:
OUTS:

This might be the easiest game to select on paper but being game 1 there are so many unknowns that you can never be confident until some patterns have been established. Sorrento lost some quality in the off season, 3 new skippers to the club although Butler and Eagles have been at Sorrento a while, 3 changed skippers from last year. But i rate doubleview very highly this year, it's not often they don't play finals so they will be hurting, have recruited extremely well and will look to make some sort of statement with this game.
Doubleview 8-0
