Round 2 will potentially clear up a few pre season questions we my have had. How strong will Warwick be at home? Will North Beach win any away games this year? Who’s stronger out of Yokine and Quinns? How much depth do Mount Lawley have and will Cambridge turn the stable into a fortress? Let’s dive in!
Warwick v North Perth
Warwick
Kevin Humfrey, William Shand, Raymond Loran, Geoffrey Hinge
Gary Chappell, Colin Shier, Ivan Sparrowhawk, Brian Ledingham
Wayne Wyatt, Larry Middleton, Clive Boyle, Allan Hornby
Adam Pretty, Bernie McNamara, Glenn Yabuka, Sean Wright INS: Shier, Pretty OUTS: Lyons, Dixon
North Perth
Michelangelo Italiano, Craig Buchanan, Todd Hampshire, Anthony Kay
Jeremy Matthews, Jamie Stewart, Richard Newstead, Chris McKenna
Mathew McEwen, Michael Lake, Timothy Thomas, Benjamin Horwood
John Hobbs, Ruby Leggett, Sally Wilke, Markus Merz INS: Lake OUTS: Struthers
Warwick got a good 1 Blue hazing last week at the hands of Quinns, but it was always a tough prospect first up. I think this week will tell us more about how competitive they may or not be this year. They are going to start as underdogs against a North Perth team who took care of business against a strong Cambridge side last week. North Perth will be disappointed if they don’t finish top 2 this year and if Warwick give a good showing on their home turf and come away with one or two rink wins, then there’s some cause for optimism. Home wins will be crucial for Warwick this season to survive, however I don’t see them getting their first one this Saturday
North Perth 7-1
Wanneroo v North Beach
Wanneroo
Brian Bucowski, Gareth Hughes, Derek Griffin, David Anderson
Robert Burns, David Burns, Echo Widermanski, Martin Nievelstein
Neil Williams, Glen Jack, Harold Whitman, Kingsley Toster
Stuart Binnie, Noel Davey, Rod Beazley, Michael Golding INS: No change OUTS:
North Beach
Geoffrey Watson, John Carlsen, Gary Gregson, Paul Butler
John Cowl, William Brown, Sandy Stevenson, Alan Howe
Matthew Buttel, Trevor Evans, Ed Retallack, Garry Barr
Todd McMahon, David Anderson, Graeme Mackenzie, Jeffery Post INS: Butler, Carlsen OUTS: Wardrope, Munday
Wanneroo picked up an early away win last week against Doubleview and will strut into this home game like John Travolta to the tune of Night Fever. North Beach aren’t renowned for their away game victories and with Wanneroo being a notoriously difficult place to travel to and win, I think this will be a one sided affair. Paul Butler coming down from white takes a rink and with no changes to the Wanneroo side they should be hopping their way to the top of the ladder after this game.
Wanneroo 7-1
Yokine v Quinns Rocks
Yokine
Fred Faigenbaum, Paul Hunter, Jeffrey West, Martin Sharp
Stephen James, Julie Cooper, Clifford Wemm, Richard D'Souza
Terry Fulcher, John McGrath, George Vassilou, Ian Cooper
John Henderson, Garry Robertson, Wayne Coffey, Shane Shaw INS: West, Coffey OUTS: James, Needs
Quinns Rocks
Paul Dean, David Eadie, Christopher Parr, Steve O'Neill
Lawrence Johnson, Glenn Mountford, Neville Costello, Shane Smith
Antony Burrows, Alan Barker, Christopher Bartle, Hugh Ward
Trevor Hines, John Carrigan, Rohan Cantrill, Derek Richmond INS: Parr OUTS: Martin
GAME OF THE ROUND: The Doggies gave a good showing across three rinks last week and showed they’re not ready to be dismissed just yet. Coffey comes back in for Yokine and slots in at 3rd to Shaw. Quinns thumped Warwick last week and look to have been bolstered even more by the return of their best performing skip from last year - Christopher Parr. Hard one to pick, I think Quinns will be cray-ving an early away win here and I believe they will just be a little too strong. Quinns to get 6 points here in a close one.
Quinns 6-2
Sorrento v Mount Lawley
Sorrento
Ian Munro, Barney Fleiser, Peter Morgan, Ian Linford
Pauline Bourne, Lily Leach, Richard Bone, David Dunstan
Philip Potts, Arren Zis, Stanley Lindsay Baker, Lance Martin
Gary Bayne, Brian Lucas, Alan Walton, Ronald Rogers INS: No change OUTS:
Mount Lawley
Denham Delmore, Mark Glasson, Guy Herriot, Phillip Park
Peter Callison, Mick Palumbo, John Fielding, Enda Munnelly
Janice Miles, William Kimber, Carmelo Lenzo, John Cottier
Martin Royce, Jane Lewis, Ian Watt, Laurence Kelly INS: Kimber, Royce OUTS: Smith, Scott
Sorrento came very close to grabbing the points at the dreaded away trip at North Beach so will head into this home game with some confidence. On the flip side, Mount Lawley only managed one rink win in their first home game so it will be interesting to see how they perform in the next few weeks. Sides seem to be relatively unchanged with a few minor tweaks and Sorrento will be looking to emulate their Premier League side’s first home game of the season with a dominant display. The Sorrento team looks very similar to the one that’s been named over the past decade, so they’re used to playing together, Mount Lawley needs to settle on the right formula and start putting some solid wins together. Early days in the season, I will tip Mount Lawley to win this one, but without much conviction.
Mount Lawley 6-2
Cambridge v Doubleview
Cambridge
Andrew Ness, Stuart Lofthouse, Scott Palmer, Nicholas Lewis
Keith Granger, Alistair Duncanson, Geoffrey Jones, Neil Bolton
Edward Leahy, Clifford Wooldridge, Don Leeson, Garry Hawkes
Phillip McShane, David Phillips, Wallace Manning, David Jones INS: Leeson, Jones OUTS: Dragicevich, Easom
Doubleview
Nigel Feletti, Antonino Gullotti, Cameron Bell, Brandon Heta
Fred Williamson, Jarrod Steele, Taylor Pervan, Lindsay Thorn
Brent Penberthy, Lee Barry, David Leed, James Barry
Thomas Mainstone, Luke Martin, Gary Papadopoulos, Mark Fredericks INS: Bell, Maintstone OUTS: M Leed, Bloxham
Finally we head to Cambridge for their first home game of the season. Only just went down to North Perth who I have tipped to win the division so they have every right to head into this game against Doubleview full of confidence. David Jones comes down from Premier League and takes a rink for Cambridge with some other fine tweaks as well. Doubleview will need to put last week behind them and do their best to get as much out of this game as possible. I think Cambridge at home will be one of the toughest trips this season and I might call for an early donut
