First week went as planned and yours truly off to a flyer in the tipping – 5/5 but was slightly off with the rink wins…Won’t get too carried away with insights into the results this week as there are always early cobwebs and we will potentially be seeing some patterns forming in the coming weeks.
Doubleview 80 (1) vs Wanneroo 85 (7)
(Brandon Heta 23 - David Anderson 18) (James Barry 19 - Kingsley Toster 22) (Lindsay Thorn 20 - Martin Nievelstein 21) (Mark Fredericks 18 - Michael Golding 24)
DV will be ruing this early home defeat. Brandon Heta getting the rink win as he does so often, however with the other 3 rinks losing, Wanneroo walked away with the 7 points. Michael Golding with the biggest win of the day getting up by 6 over Fredericks and while the other rinks were tight affairs, Wanneroo proved to be too strong overall. Wanneroo back at home next week against North Beach should be confident about a good start to the season and DV are faced with a tough trip to Cambridge. The age old question of whether certain players play front in PL or back end in Blue is always an interesting one for clubs like DV – we will wait t to see if any changes are made as after moving down from last season, although it was a close aggregate this wasn’t the start they were hoping for.
North Perth 88 (7) vs Cambridge 83 (1)
(Anthony Kay 19 - Garry Hawkes 18) (Benjamin Horwood 26 - Neil Bolton 19) (Christopher McKenna 20 - Nicholas Lewis 24) (Markus Merz 23 - Wallace Manning 22)
The Pioneers are off and running with a very good win against a strong Knights outfit with plenty of PL experience. Ben Horwood’s form from last season continued where it left off as he was the biggest winner on the day and with Pommy and Ya-ya Merz getting over the line, it was enough to outdo the effort from Nick Lewis and his rink. I tipped both these teams to be in the race come season’s end and it looked to be a hotly contested afternoon. Knights back at home next week against DV and North Perth travel to Warwick -very winnable games for both teams.
North Beach 75 (7) vs Sorrento 73 (1)
(Alan Howe 17 - Lance Martin 15) (Garry Barr 21 - David Dunstan 20) (Gary Gregson 12 - Ian Linford 25) (Jeffery Post 25 - Ronald Rogers 13)
Not a convincing win, but a win nonetheless. North Beach getting the job done at home in a very close finish. Ian Linford’s gallant effort wasn’t enough to grab the agg, with Post’s win just about cancelling it out and with the other two NB rinks getting over the line, the Beach goers take a sigh of relief and notch up their first home win of the season. North Beach will need these home wins to stay up this year so they’re off to a good start and Sorrento can take some solace in the fact that they came close on a surface where a lot of club’s struggle and can go into their home game next week with some confidence against the Mounters.
Mt Lawley 75 (5.5) vs Yokine 63 (2.5)
(Enda Munnelly 17 - Richard DSouza 18) (John Cottier 17 - Ian Cooper 19) (Laurence Kelly 17 - Shane Shaw 17) (Phillip Park 24 - Martin Sharp 9)
The old doggies proved they still have some bite and came away with 2.5 points from the Mounting yard. Phil Park was the big winner on the day with an agg winning 15 shot victory. Kelly and Shaw battled out a draw, Cooper beat Cottier by two and ex Mounter D’Souza just got over the line against Munnelly by 1. This is a very promising start for the Doggies and really, they were outdone by a rink boasting two players who played Premier League last season with a very handy front end (I’m obviously talking about the lead and second positions). Yokine probably finishing the game with more cause for optimism, the Mounters, like DV need to work out the best combinations with a lot of talent across the board. That being said, a win is a win and it’s always good chalking that first one off.
Quinns Rocks 117 (7) vs Warwick 67 (1)
(Derek Richmond 25 - Allan Hornby 16) (Hugh Ward 21 - Sean Wright 26) (Shane Smith 38 - Brian Ledingham 7) (Steve ONeill 33 - Geoffrey Hinge 18)
Quinns welcomed Warwick back to 1st division with a 50 point demolition and 7 points. Quinns asserting themselves on the league early with a dominant performance across 3 rinks. Shane Smith’s rink got the pots with a 31 shot victory over Ledingham and Hinge copped a 15 shot loss to Steve O’Neill. Derek Richmond rounded out the shots up with a 9 point win and Sean Wright made sure the Magpies didn’t head back down south empty handed with a win over the Ward rink. Warwick host North Perth next week and we shall see how they go – let’s not jump to any conclusions too early, however I think that result will tell us more about how Warwick are going to go this season. Quinns always strong at home and they head to the kennel next game for what should be game of the round.
