I thought the first round was going to be pretty easy picking but how wrong I was, Sorrento taking care of the defending premiers and the Manning golden girls taking care of matters in their win against the Saints. A very interesting first week but lets go through the results of round 1
Bassendean 84 (7) vs Kardinya 63 (1)
(David Rhodes 25 - Brad Henley 19) (Ruairi Kenyon 23 - Matthew Allen 17) (Simon Alden 21 - Daryl Radford 10) (Wayne Neilson 15 - Steven Novak 17)
Great start from the Lions taking care of the Cats with a 21 shot win and 7 points at home. The change of green paid dividends for the home side with returning skipper Simon Alden doing the damage with an 11 shot win over Darryl Radford. Rhodes and Kenyon backing things up with a 6 shot win each and the lone point for the visitors came from Steve Novak who just edged out Wayne Neilson by 2. The Lions now head to Manning while Kardy head back home looking to get their first win for the season.
Match of the round and what a beauty this turned out to be but it was the Knights walking away with a 1 rink 1 shot win. Player of the series at the recent Australian sides series I believe was best on ground with his 2 shot win over Nairn while Glenn Pauling just got over Clive Adams by 1. Rocco Bresland with the extra point for the visitors with a 5 shot win over Cam Harris but it was the rink of Pieter Harris that got them over the line with a 9 shot win over Justin Opie. The Knights head over to Kardy next week while the Millers host Safety Bay.
Safety Bay 57 (0) vs Mt Lawley 89 (8)
(Chris Carruthers 19 - Corey Bessant 24) (Graeme Smith 14 - Daniel Trewhella 23) (Grant Taylor 8 - Shane Knott 23) (Matthew Mortensen 16 - Ben Leggett 19)
No real surprise here but the Mounters proving too strong for the home side handing them the first duck egg for the season. Shane Knott was the big winner with a 15 shot win over Grant Taylor. The other 3 rinks were all under single figures but it was all in favour of the away side. A great start for Mt Lawley getting all 8 points on the road as they head back home next week to take on Sorrento in the top of the table clash while Safety Bay head to Sth Perth.
Sorrento 98 (7.5) vs Doubleview 60 (0.5)
(Bruce Eagles 21 - Kyle McIlroy 15) (Paul Knight 24 - Ryan Moyle 14) (Rhett Butler 34 - Anthony Williams 12) (Ross Cunningham 19 - Charlie Slavich 19)
Out come Sorrento in their new shirts and caused the upset of the round thumping the defending premiers by 38 shots. It was almost a clean sweep for the home side but the big win of the day came from Rhett Butler with a 22 shot win over Ant Williams. Paul Knight and the fine wine Bruce Eagles both recorded wins while Ross Cunningham shared the point with Charlie Slavich. I picked Sorrento to hang on this year however if they can keep this kind of performance going especially at home who knows they might even push for finals, lets see how they go in the coming weeks.
Osborne Park 67 (1.5) vs Manning 69 (6.5)
(Jack East 11 - Kristina Krstic 25) (John Goddard 24 - Thomas Mitchell 11) (Ryan Brown 14 - Warren Holt 15) (Segan Pasalich 18 - Nathan Jones 18)
The Eagles kicking off their season with an away win in a close battle but just edging out the Saints with a 2 shot win. New recruit Warren Holt just falling over the line by a shot over Ryan Brown while Segan Pasalich and Nathan Jones couldn’t be separated sharing the point. Though in the battle of the state skippers it was the girls that came up trumps and took care of the aggregate also with the Kristina Kristic rink getting up over Jack East by 14. John Goddard getting the only rink win for the home side with a 13 shot win over Tommy Mitchell
