What a great start to the season. R1 was mostly close across the board with some tight games indicating a competitive season ahead. Pretty special round for our amazing game which should be recognised. The 1st game of Open Gender 1 White is definitely worthy of celebrating & as some would say shows great progression in our game & will invariably lead to a better sporting event & competition for all genders & families.
Another incredibly tight tussle with Girl Power the new force in 1 White helping the Saints nab a huge away win on the road against a very competent home side.
Thomas got the show off to a great start against Atkinson winning by 3 in a close contest. Krstic bounced back by the same score against Stevens to make it 1 a piece for either side. Butch & Kriletich couldn't be separated all day finishing on 23-23 each which meant it the final match was all in with the chips for both sides, winner takes the Agg. Strachan's side started the game thinking it might be a belated Spice Girls reunion but the smiles didn't last long as the Solly lead Saints all female team put some superb ends together to race out to a lead where the Lions were chasing. The 4 piece band turned into the 'Runaways' near the end with a 5 shot win & set down the gauntlet for GirlPower & take home a huge away Agg for the Saints. There couldn't be a better promotion for Open Gender than this one right from R1, awesome to see in our beautiful sport. Well done to Helen Stevens, Shaan Saunders, Pamela Chalmers & Shari Solly.
Victoria Park Carlisle 95 (7) vs North Beach 62 (1)
(David Florance 9 - Gavin Crosthwaite 22) (Gary Beckwith 32 - Mark Douthie 11) (Graeme Wishart 22 - Steve Wood 20) (Lee Such 32 - Paul Butler 9)
The trip was always going to be difficult for a changed North Beach side but the home side were just too powerful all over to get too close in the end.
Wood did fairly well to keep within 2 shots of Vic Pk best skipper Wushart. Such's side had all the answers all day with a massive result over Douthie by a whooping 23 shots where the away side couldn't break double figures & locked the Agg away early. Beckwith poured on another 20 shots agg onto the total by rolling Butler. However Crostwaite weighed in on his own double digits trashing by stopping Florence getting to double digits in a low scoring contest by 13 shots.
Vic Pk go top after R1 & maintaining that style of performance coming from 1 Blue against a North Beach side who still have a major chunk of that experienced PL side is impressive.
(Michael Carey 21 - James Newton 23) (Paul Smith MAN 20 - Gary Ford 17) (Wayne Heldt 17 - Karl Vandersluys 20) (William Fraser 8 - James Bowden 22)
Straight off the bat we get the proper first upset with Lions ripping into the Eagles in a ruthless manner with only 3 shots off grabbing all 8pts. Leeming turned the tables on last year & came out swinging & didn't look back. Manning will be disappointed to drop a home game in R1 but they seem to be fairly beaten across the rinks. Fraser couldn't get past double digits against a dominant Bowden, losing by 14 shots. Smith pulled 1pt back against Ford & that was Eagles only point of the day. Vandersluys edged Heldt by 3 shots in a close game & Newton also scraped past Carey on the last few bowls by 2 shots.
Perfect result for the Lions in getting a huge away Agg so early, let's hope they can use this as a springboard.
Result: Leeming 7 - 1
Prediction: Manning 6 - 2
Gosnells 74 (2) vs Joondalup 76 (6)
(Brett Holland 25 - Jon Hunter 14) (Eoghan Gahan 15 - Barry Crawford 17) (Glenn Lynch 20 - Brian McMurdo 18) (Rue Bishop 14 - Shane Rixom 27)
Super tight contest here with the Dolphins just getting over the line with the last bowl of the game. Kookaburra's will be disappointed as they're now on the back foot from the start but it could really have swung either way.
We kindly got the following contribution from the Dolphins: Top division travelled to Gosnells determined to do well. In extremely trying conditions due to the wind as the green surface was wonderful to play on and things came down to the wire. Shane Rixom and his team had a great win over Rue Bishop 27 - 14 with Brian McMurdo’s team unlucky to go down on the last end to Glenn Lynch 18 - 20. Jon Hunter’s team played against an extremely experienced Brett Holland team and unfortunately went down 14 - 25. The last rink went also down to the wire and with the second last bowl of the day, our leader Barry Crawford produced an absolute pearler to secure the win against Eoghan Gahan 17 - 15 with a valuable 6 points.
We did say if Mossies kept this within 15 it would be a little win & they did just that with only 14 separating both sides in the end.
Abonnel & Cranswick went shot for shot for most of the day & couldn't be separated with 16-16 when the hands were shook. Another massive result for Girl Power was Featherby's side huge win over Gibson by 8. Great result considering the home track bullies at Cockburn. You would think a rink of this calibre will have similar results for the next 17 rounds. Krajnacic rolled Robertson by 20 shots in what probably put it slightly beyond reach for Mossies but let's not forget it was nearly double scores in the same game last year & Titan's have a huge home track advantage. Big Willie finished off with another point for the home side with 2 shots over a galant Hoffman.
Probably the result we expected as Titans get the dream start but if Mossies keep bringing that intensity they'll be an absolute shoe-in for Finals.
