Another very interesting week of fixtures in Blue South as we get down to the pointy end of the season. A strange quirk in the fixtures with the top 5 sides playing the bottom 5 teams this week and guess what - the top 5 teams were all victorious to further cement a 2 tier competition. We are left with 5 teams all locked within a handful of points fighting to avoid relegation. The top 5 are all still in with a chance of securing finals action. I am pretty sure that it will all come down to the final round of fixtures before we know for sure who will be relegated and who will be heading to some challenge matches. Let’s have a quick look at the the results this week.
Kardinya 83 (6.5) vs Warnbro 59 (1.5)
(Darryl Flintoff 14 - Dennis Pattullo 21) (John Rochford 16 - Barry Kalinowsky 16) (Norm Ball 22 - Troy Dellar 17) (Ross Knapp 31 - George Jackson 5)
Kardinya take this one and 6.5 points to keep themselves within reach of top spot. Ross Knapp the big winner for Kardinya with a 26 shot win over the normally reliable Dr G and his rink. Warnbro will be pretty pleased with 1.5 points on the road and will be banking on 2 strong performance at home over the next 3 weeks to get themselves out of trouble. They take on Thornlie next week in what is probably their grand final whilst Kardinya must travel to Dalkeith.
Thornlie 68 (1.5) vs Kalamunda 82 (6.5)
(Daniel Slade 16 - Frank Carbone 16) (Jim Stean 12 - William Brandsma 28) (Mark Separovich 20 - Dwayne Wooltorton 21) (Terence McCormack 20 - Wayne Olive 17)
Thornlie tried hard but in the end Kalamunda were just to classy. After getting called in to face the Kalamunda committee during the week after a sub par performance the week before King Bill bounced back with a 16 shot win over Jim Stean to help carry the aggregate. Kalamunda still just 2.5 points clear of Kardinya so still a lot to play for. Next week they are back at home against Forrestfield and they will be looking for a big win to help cement top position. Thornlie now under extreme pressure with a difficult road trip to Warnbro.
Rockingham 71 (6) vs Dalkeith Nedlands 65 (2)
(Bruce Edwards 18 - Andrew Foster 19) (Lindsay Atkins 10 - Darren Redeckis 20) (Marcus Simpson 23 - Martin Saunders 11) (Mark Devenny 20 - Jesse Brown 15)
Dalkeith pretty close again in this one but in the end Rockingham did enough to record 6 important points. The returning Marcus Simpson with the best result to help Rocky emerge with the points. Dalkeith now under real pressure and to have any hope of surviving they like Warnbro face their GF next week at home vs Kardinya. They will also need to win both home games to give themselves some chance at survival. Rockingham off to Rossmoyne next week with still some hope of getting up into the top 3.
Another good win for Willetton at home on Saturday and 6.5 points. This keeps them in 3rd position for now but they will need to keep winning with both Rockingham and Cockburn ready to pounce over the final 3 matches of the season should they slip up. Cameron Girvan did most of the damage with a strong 19 shot victory over Craig Edson. Next week Willetton face a huge fixture away at Cockburn in a real test for 3rd spot. Cockburn have become the new Warnbro with the home fortress but could this be Willetton’s moment. Rossmoyne head home to take on the improving Rockingham outfit with all to play for.
Forrestfield & Districts 69 (1) vs Cockburn 82 (7)
(Glenn Sewell 15 - James Wylie 18) (Jarad Weppner 15 - Paul Brotherston 20) (Rhys Tillemans 25 - Peter Burgess 16) (Trent Tillemans 14 - Steve Srhoy 28)
I have been saying for a while that if Cockburn could pinch an away win they would give themselves a real chance at 3rd position given that they are near impossible to beat at home. They did just that on the weekend with a somewhat surprise win over Forrestfield on Saturday. Steve Srhoy rolled back the clock with a solid 14 shot win over Trent Tillemans. With 2 home matches to come out of the final 3 Cockburn are in with a real chance for 3rd but they will need to take care of business over the incumbent 3rd placed Willetton next week. Forrestfield with that loss now back under the pump and they will need to produce something special away at Kalamunda next week.
