(Anthony Kay 27 - Steve ONeill 14) (Benjamin Horwood 25 - Derek Richmond 15) (Chris McKenna 21 - Shane Smith 18) (Markus Merz 15 - Hugh Ward 21)
It’s official! The Pioneers are off to White after their comprehensive 20 shot victory over Quinns Rocks. Congratulations to North Perth who have gone through a lot of disappointing play off finals in the past, so to get that automatic promotion must’ve felt good and I’m sure a few craft beers would have been consumed Saturday night. Happy McKenna took care of the dominant rink in the division – defeating Shane Smith by 3 shots and Legs Kay picked up the pots with his 13 shot win over O’neill. Ben Horwood won by 10 over Richmond, supported by Ben Leggett’s sister Ruby who was apparently interviewed after the game and mentioned that her inspiration is her big brother and she aspires to be just like him one day – cute! The Mullet from the North got an important away point for the visitors with his win over Merz. The Pioneers can rest easy and look forward to bringing home a flag in a couple of weeks and Quinns need to beat Cambridge next week to ensure they’re not having to defend a challenge from below. Special mention to Shane Smith who will finish the season as the top performing skip – with an incredible shots up and only having lost 3 games (so far) that’s a mighty effort!
Cambridge 85 (8) vs Mount Lawley 66 (0)
(Garry Hawkes 23 - Guy Herriot 19) (Neil Bolton 20 - Andrew Jones 14) (Nicholas Lewis 23 - Phillip Park 16) (Scott Palmer 19 - Michael Erceg 17)
The Knights must have spent the week reinforcing the Stable that was conquered for the first time a couple of weeks back, turning it back into the fortress it once was. These two teams started the game with 8 points between them, both coming off losses and needing a win to get as far away from those challenge spots as possible. Nick Lewis and his merry men picked up the pots with their win over Dill Pickle Phil by 7 shots, word has it there was a fight broken out in this game, thankfully it wasn’t between opponents, but with a temperature gauge box – news has it the box came away without any serious injuries. Lord Bolton got the important win over State prospect AJ by 6 shots, Scotty P won by 2 over the Croatian Stallion and Garry Hawkes beat the returning Feathers Herriot. This result sets up an interesting finish for both sides. If they both win, they will be safe. If they lose, they will need results to go their way to avoid defending a challenge from 2nd division. Stay tuned…
Sorrento 76 (1) vs Doubleview 82 (7)
(David Dunstan 17 - David Cosgrove 21) (Lance Martin 20 - Lindsay Thorn 29) (Richard Bone 22 - James Barry 13) (Ronald Rogers 17 - Cameron Bell 19)
Wow! Upset of the round here as Doubleview with nothing to play for, beat the 3rd placed side in the division playing for a finals spot. All I can say is, Sorrento are very very lucky that Quinns and Mounters lost, otherwise they would have had their finals hopes dashed. Looking at it now, they just need 1 rink win next game to make the finals and play off for a chance at White. Cossie rolled over Dunstan by 4 shots, Cam Bell chimed in with another win by 2 over we do Ron Ron Ron, Prickles came away with the pots with his win over Martin by 9 and Richard Bone picked up a very handy point in the grand scheme of things with his win over Barry. Sorrento are 7.5 points ahead of 4th and they play 2nd placed Wanneroo next week for a warm up game before they will most likely do battle next week in the play off game. As we know, Doubleview will be playing 2nd divi next year but always nice to finish the season off on a high as they host the premiers next week.
Yokine 98 (8) vs Wanneroo 59 (0)
(Paul Kelly 26 - Pieter Geus 15) (Richard DSouza 21 - Kingsley Toster 19) (Shane Shaw 26 - Martin Nievelstein 13) (Wayne Coffey 25 - David Anderson 12)
Yokine have won again, beating the 2nd placed team 8-0 and with that, escaping the bottom 2 as they fly up into 7th position. They are now only 2.5 points behind Cambridge and Mt. Lawley and 7 points ahead of North Beach in 9th. For Wanneroo, like Sorrento, they got lucky with other results and remain in 2nd and are guaranteed a top 3 play off finish. Coffey and Shaw shared the pots with their 13 shot wins over Anderson and Big Nev, P.K juiced the Geus by 11 and Richard the Glove beat the 2nd best rink in the division by 2. This isn’t the result Wanneroo would have wanted going into their dress rehearsal against Sorrento next week, however for Yokine, they are hitting form at the right time and might even escape having to defend a challenge after looking like facing automatic relegation just a few weeks ago.
Warwick 67 (1.5) vs North Beach 77 (6.5)
(Brian Ledingham 18 - John Bartorillo 18) (Glenn Yabuka 21 - Garry Barr 16) (Graeme Smith 15 - Lee Mitten 22) (Raymond Loran 13 - Paul Butler 21)
This result also having a big say in what might happen in the final round. North Beach keeping themselves within an aggregate of Warwick in 8th now. Paul Butler served Loran an 8 shot beating picking up the pots and Mitten’s win over Smith earned them another important point. Ledingham and Batorillo could not be separated as they shared the point and Yakuba picked up a valuable point with his win over Barr by 5. If North Beach get 8 over Yokine next week and Mt Lawley get 8 against Warwick at the Mounting yard, these teams will swap positions and North Beach will defend a challenge and after what was an impressive season for the most part, Warwick might be up for automatic relegation.
