Sorrento 79 (5.5) vs North Perth 76 (2.5)
(David Dunstan 28 - Markus Merz 17)
(Ian Linford 15 - Chris McKenna 15)
(Timothy Murray 22 - Anthony Kay 23)
(Trevor Orton 14 - Benjamin Horwood 21)
It was the battle of the fluorescent shirts this week and not sure who wore it better, but the Swans came out flapping and recorded their first win of the season over the fancied (not fancy) North Perth outfit. Ben Horwood ticked off another rink win to maintain his unbeaten record with Pommy scraping through by 1 over Murray. Linford and McKenna couldn’t be separated and cometh the hour cometh the man, David Dunstan checked out with an agg winning victory over the Swiss international Merz to earn Sorrento the majority of the points and get their season off and running. Both teams with tricky games next week as the Pioneers host the Roos and the Swans travel to the Stable to take on the Knights.

Yokine 84 (6.5) vs Cambridge 82 (1.5)
(Ian Cooper 20 - Don Leeson 19)
(Martin Sharp 17 - Neil Bolton 20)
(Shane Shaw 20 - Nicholas Lewis 20)
(Wayne Coffey 27 - Garry Hawkes 23)
I expected the Doggies to give a little bit this week and that they did, beating a strong Cambridge team at the Kennel. We got the match up we were hoping for as Shaw and Lewis played out a draw. Don Leeson stepped up to the Skipper’s plate and went down to Cooper by 1, Bolton got Sharp by 3 and Coffey recording the biggest win of the day getting a leg up on Hawkes by 4. Yokine bagging the 4 agg points and 2.5 rinks, with both teams sitting mid table and will be hoping to jump up a few spots on the ladder in the coming weeks.

Wanneroo 63 (2) vs Quinns Rocks 76 (6)
(David Anderson 20 - Derek Richmond 10)
(Kingsley Toster 18 - Steve ONeill 17)
(Martin Nievelstein 13 - Hugh Ward 19)
(Michael Golding 12 - Shane Smith 30)
This game gave me a little bit of a surprise – although Quinns look to be in the hunt this year – albeit relying heavily on the Shane Smith rink who continue to notch up big scores. An 18 shot victory to Smith over Golding did most of the damage, with Ward also recording a win over Nievelstein by 6. 2 consolation points to Anderson and Toster meant Wanneroo finishes the round on top, while Quinns go second and look to be a real force this year. Quinns host North Beach next week, while Wanneroo travel to North Perth – I’m expecting Quinns to be on top by next weekend – unless someone shuts down the rampaging Smith from the North.

North Beach 87 (7) vs Mount Lawley 75 (1)
(Alan Howe 20 - Enda Munnelly 19)
(Jeffery Post 26 - John Cottier 15)
(Paul Butler 22 - Laurence Kelly 15)
(Terry Jones 19 - Guy Herriot 26)
This one went as predicted with North Beach pocketing another home win. Herriot was promoted into the skipper’s role and recorded the only points for the visitors. Alan Howe fell over the line against the Munnelly who had Andrew Jones who laced up the cleats and came out of semi retirement. Posty recorded a dominant win over Cottier by 9 and Butler served Kelly a 7 shot defeat. North Beach need to win these home ones and if they gather up a few points on the road, they could be a chance for finals. Mt Lawley really don’t look settled and they’re realizing there’s a bit of a step up in standard from 2nd division – especially with some of their key players from last season missing. They host a struggling View side next week and North Beach travel up the freeway to Quinns.

Doubleview 58 (0.5) vs Warwick 92 (7.5)
(Brandon Heta 17 - Sean Wright 17)
(James Barry 11 - Brian Ledingham 29)
(Lindsay Thorn 18 - Geoffrey Hinge 22)
(Mark Fredericks 12 - Raymond Loran 24)
Wasn’t convinced how this one was going to go and it was Warwick who swooped down and plucked 7.5 points from the View side. Ledingam and Loran both with double digit wins over Barry and Fredericks did the majority of the damage, consolidated by a 4 point win for Hinge over Prickles. Heta and Wright couldn’t be separated and Warwick proved they are going to be competitive this year, jumping into 5th place on the ladder. They host Yokine next week and Doubleview head to Mt Lawley, where the loser will most likely finish the round on the bottom.
