Another very close set of results for R5 in what seems to be a pattern with 4 of 5 games finishing within roughly a dozen shots of each other, fines margins already this early in the season & when they do not go your way it has a huge impact making the recovery so much more difficult.
The season has been a blood bath for any side looking for consistency as all sides are stealing points off each other & nobody can really break away although Joondalup are trying. It's ridiculous that after 5 rounds there's only 4pts between 3rd & 8th but that's the margins. It's not even going down to Agg wins but down to rink wins at this stage.
Victoria Park Carlisle 72 (1) vs Osborne Park 87 (7)
(David Florance 15 - Pamela Chalmers 23) (Gary Beckwith 13 - Neville Stevens 24) (Graeme Wishart 27 - Jeremy Thomas 18) (Lee Such 17 - Aaron Kriletich 22)
The Reds started with 'Such' promise but are now in trouble sitting 9th after playing 3 of their 5 games at home, not a great sign so far. With 2 home wins & nothing on the road they'll need a few big weeks. Again it was Wishart doing the heavy lifting with another strong 9 shot win. I would imagine the Reds have won 8 rinks so far & Wishart has won 4 of them himself, that's the reliance of that rink to date. Good to have but it makes a massive target for other sides if they can get a strong match on that rink.
The Ossy Pk ladies continue their brilliant form as the scratch up another victim of girl power, with Chalmers on 3 from 3 skippering. Kriletich & Stevens finally get that L monkey off their back which will be a big relief for both sides. With the Saints only 1pt off 3rd they have every chance next week to get into genuine Finals contention. The Saints have a good platform to build from here to get a little purple patch going.
(Josip (joe) Marevic 16 - William Fraser 21) (Marc Abonnel 18 - Michael Carey 20) (Tony Krajancic 28 - Paul Smith 9) (William Tepania 17 - Wayne Heldt 14)
Another close encounter for the Titans at home which is unusual to say again but 15 shots was enough to get them a solid 6pts at home to a Eagles side that has shown so determination after the wakeup call from Leeming. Other than Smith failing to get to double figures the rest were solid across the rinks with Fraser grabbing the only away point for Manning. Krajancic was the standout for the Titans which was the difference in the end.
Cockburn are back into 3rd spot after a few scary weeks circling the drain at the bottom of the ladder. They have a soft 3 weeks ahead & they'll need 3 from 3 to head into Xmas as genuine top 2 or 3 from the rest of the chasing group. Eagles drop to 6th but only marginally, they put on a good show & most visits to Cockburn earning 2pts isn't the worse dayout.
Result: Cockburn 6 - 2
Prediction: Cockburn 7 - 1
North Beach 90 (8) vs Leeming 55 (0)
(Gavin Crosthwaite 22 - Gary Ford 16) (Mark Douthie 30 - James Bowden 13) (Michael Sweeney 22 - Karl Vandersluys 11) (Steve Wood 16 - James Newton 15)
North Beach flex as the home track bullies given the ladder leaders a handy little touch up to show them who's boss on their track & letting the air right out of Leeming's unbeaten balloon in style. That's 3 from 5 for North Beach & guess what it's 3 from 3 at home, funny that. North Beach will need some away Wins at some stage but as we said at the start of the season, 7 to 8 home wins keeps them safe & grabbing 2 on the road get them Finals, simple maths.
The Lions wouldn't be too phased from the loss although 1 or 2pts may have been the preference rather than a duck egg but they've had a good run of late & will bounce back. They have a few tricky games to come against some top sides so they'll be really tested this side of Santa. If they hold their own, then I'm happy to slot them in for a Finals spot. Let's not talk about last year as it's probably something Leeming don't wish to recall too much but they were 3 from 4 last season after a strong start only to buckle epically going 7 games without a win so things can change real quick just when you think everything is cruising.
Result: North Beach 8 - 0
Prediction: North Beach 6 - 2
Mosman Park 75 (1.5) vs Joondalup 79 (6.5)
(Cameron Hoffman 19 - James Groves 21) (Lisa Featherby 15 - Barry Crawford 20) (Mitchell Cranswick 20 - Jon Hunter 17) (Steven Swanson 21 - Shane Ernest Rixom 21)
2 genuine contenders going toe to toe here with the Dolphins pulling off a remarkable away win against a gallant Mossies. Joondalup are a good game ahead of 3rd & the chasing pack & you'd think with a favourable run to Xmas they'll be 2 games clear of 3rd but they'll need another few big away performances until they get that purple patch at home in the later rounds. Getting 6.5pts against another possible top4 is massive & with now only 1 dropped game from 5 they're the new top dogs.
Mossies will be a little nervous around sitting 7th & do need to grab all points at home considering the not so hot away form. They've 3 tough games ahead which makes a Finals spot for the Xmas break extremely unlikely but mid-table would be a good result.
(Brett Holland 17 - Garry Atkinson 22) (Eoghan Gahan 20 - Joel Hitchcock 17) (Glenn Lynch 24 - Jovan Krstic 17) (Rue Bishop 18 - Neil Strachan 22)
The bottom sides go head to head so see who wants the wooden spoon with a razor tight finish all the way to the last bowl with only 1 shot between the sides in the end. Kookaburra's deny the Lions their first W of the season & send them buried to the bottom winless.
Gosnells jump up into 8th spot with their 2nd win & they'll be easily telling themselves that even though they are sitting 8th they're only 4pts off 3rd spot. Could Gosnells play Finals? Hardly likely but the table won't stay so compacted for long so they'll need to make their move into safety soon enough as they have 3 home games from 4 from R5 to R8. Needless to say if they don't maximise that run then it's curtains for the corresponding fixtures away back to back in Feb'25. Basso have 2 games from the next 5 at home so dropping either one makes Xmas like very daunting with a long & possibly impossible climb to recover. The good news is the pack are not running away from them so there's still time.
