My apologies for going MIA this week. Probably a good thing for my self pride as I would have got a couple wrong! Let’s get into the results…
Quinns Rocks 69 (1.5) vs North Perth 79 (6.5)
(Erron Martin 18 - Benjamin Horwood 26) (Hugh Ward 21 - Anthony Kay 21) (Shane Smith 15 - Chris McKenna 12) (Steve ONeill 15 - Markus Merz 20)
The main event for this week was the battle of Quinns Rocks and North Perth, with the sub plot of the two only undefeated skips on opposing sides. We didn’t get that direct match up, so there was a rink on both sides who needed to try and tame the beast. Hugh “I made mullets cool” Ward and Pommy played out a draw and Markus “MC Hammer” Merz recorded a good win against O’Neill. Ben “King in the North (Perth)” – there can only be one King in the North, enjoyed the biggest win of the day with his win over Erron Martin by 8 to remain undefeated this season. Shane “beep test” Smith held down his rink and remains the dominant skipper in the division, however credit must be given to Chris “small circle on the inside” McKenna who kept it tight and didn’t allow Smith to get away like he has done so many times this season. So, the Craypot has been conquered for the first time, however, both teams remain in the top 2 and will head into the break with great cause for optimism.
Mount Lawley 91 (8) vs Cambridge 55 (0)
(Enda Munnelly 18 - Nicholas Lewis 17) (John Cottier 19 - Garry Hawkes 11) (Laurence Kelly 18 - Scott Palmer 14) (Phillip Park 36 - Neil Bolton 13)
The Knights made their way over to the Mounting Yard in a bid to consolidate their spot in the top 3 and create a bit of a gap between them and the chasing pack. Mount Lawley had been on a good run before running into North Perth last week, but started the game in the top 4 with the aim to take the spot of Cambridge. Enda “The Irish Stallion” Munnelly won a hard fought contest against a strong Nick Lewis side and Legs Kelly got over the line against Palmer by 4. The open gender representative rink, led by Cottier performed well and won by 8 over big Gazza and enter the one, the only, bowl in one hand, biltong and beer in the other Phil Park and his team who won by 23 shots over Bolton and his team to secure the agg and the 8 points. This leaves both teams in 3rd and 4th place both on 36.50 points as they look to make a run for the finals in the second half of the season.
Doubleview 82 (1) vs Sorrento 89 (7)
(Cameron Bell 27 - Ian Linford 10) (David Cosgrove 20 - Ronald Rogers 27) (James Barry 19 - Lance Martin 27) (Lindsay Thorn 16 - David Dunstan 25)
Always hesitant to call it too early, however I feel Doubleview are running out of games (especially the more winnable ones) to stake their case for staying up this year. This was definitely one of those games and they’ll be kicking themselves for letting this one slip. 3 of the rinks went down by a decent margin and the only saving grace for the View was the Cameron Bell led rink who won by 17 shots over Linford. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and Doubleview remain rooted to the bottom of the ladder just before the break. Sorrento jump up to 7th, but as we all know, 1 Blue is brutal and the next goal will be top 6 to avoid the challenge from below.
Wanneroo 76 (6) vs Yokine 72 (2)
(David Anderson 19 - Ian Cooper 13) (Kingsley Toster 29 - Wayne Coffey 13) (Martin Nievelstein 15 - Shane Shaw 24) (Pieter Geus 13 - Richard DSouza 22)
Two sides out of form battled this one out in what looked to be a tight contest all day. Shane “top Dog” Shaw and Richard “don’t be scared of the rubber glove” D’Souza both with impressive 9 shot wins over Nievelstein and Geus and with Anderson falling over the line by 6 over Cooper, it was the leading Wanneroo rink skippered by Kingsley Toster who won by an agg winning 16 shots over Coffey. Yokine are heading down the ladder with some momentum and need to find a way to sink their heels in and make a play second half of the season.
North Beach 83 (1) vs Warwick 88 (7)
(Garry Barr 21 - Sean Wright 24) (Jeffery Post 19 - Brian Ledingham 23) (Lee Mitten 30 - Raymond Loran 13) (Terry Jones 13 - Geoffrey Hinge 28)
The Magpies flew in to take on the Seagulls in the Battle of the Birds. Warwick have really impressed this year and I’m sure have exceeded many people’s expectations. North Beach on the other hand have failed to impress so far and these home games are essential if they have any chance of staying up. Mitten recorded the biggest win of the day with a 17 shot win over Loran but that didn’t cause Geoffrey to become too unhinged and he recorded a 15 shot win of his own. Sean Wright raised the bar with his 3 shot win and Ledingham posted a 4 shot win to round out an important away win for the Maggies to secure 5th spot as they lay a solid foundation for a finals challenge this season.
