(Garry Hawkes 23 - Christopher Bell 12) (Peter Easom 17 - Les Spinks 21) (Stephen Buckley 17 - Andrew Elmer 25) (Wallace Manning 22 - Victor Orchard 17)
The Knights have been battered and bruised this season, but like a wounded warrior defending his castle, they’re throwing punches right to the bitter end. In doing so they delivered a brutal blow to Morley, ending their late charge for automatic survival and condemning them to a final-round scrap for their Division status.
The Ferret managed to nibble an away point from Easom and Elmer did the job on Buckley to grab another point for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough. Hawkes went absolutely ding-dong, belting Bell by 11 shots, while Manning squeezed the extra point out of Orchard to seal the deal for Cambridge.
With the bottom four all facing each other next week, there’s still a faint whiff of drama in the air – although it will take some serious upsets and some monster margins for the ladder to look any different.
Quinns Rocks 81 (7) vs Bassendean 76 (1)
(Hugh Ward 9 - Grant Stokes 25) (Shane Smith 22 - Butch Dinnison 13) (Steve ONeill 25 - Neil Strachan 16) (Warrick Ferris 25 - Arthur Bartlett 22)
Quinns came into this clash knowing a win would keep the chasing pack at arm’s length for another week – and they got the job done.
The headline act was the clash of the big dogs: Smith vs Butch. In a rumblin’, tumblin’ battle, Smith’s rink came out on top and he rockets up the skip ladder again to sit at 12–5 for the season. It would be fascinating to see Smith’s record across the last three years – you’d struggle to find too many better across any division.
Ferris had the cogs on his wheel turning nicely with a tidy 3-shot win over Bartlett, while O’Neil knocked over the Strachan rink by 9. Word has it Strachany was up all night Friday waiting for my motivational message that never came.
Stokesy tried to drag Basso over the line off his own bat, belting the Mullet from the North by 16 and almost claiming the aggregate himself, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Bassendean did at least sneak home with a point and, thanks to the Mavericks losing, they’re safe for another year.
Quinns now travel to the Mounting Yard next week knowing one point is all that stands between them and automatic promotion.
Sorrento 74 (1) vs Mount Lawley 78 (7)
(Brad Wicks 20 - Enda Munnelly 23) (Ian Linford 13 - John Cottier 21) (Jan Konig 18 - Travis Ingram 22) (Lance Martin 23 - Andrew Jones 12)
Sorrento will be thankful there’s only one game left this season – it’s been a long and bruising campaign and another loss here at the hands of the Mounters didn’t help the mood.
Mount Lawley came in needing at least 7 points to keep their promotion hopes alive and they delivered. The Irish Stallion and Trav “One Million Dollars” Ingram both chalked up tight wins over Wicks and Konig, while Cottier delivered the knockout blow with the aggregate-defining win over Linford.
AJ’s hopes of forcing his way back into the state side for the WA series later this year took a dent when he went down to Big Lance by 11. Rumour has it AJ drew two on the penultimate end that turned into a 7– so technically the Mounters have him to thank for winning the agg off his own boot.
Mount Lawley are still a sniff for promotion but must collect 8 points against Quinns next week. As for Sorrento, they need 8 themselves, a massive margin, and Cambridge to knock over Ellenbrook to even sniff the playoff game. A white rag was reportedly seen floating over the Sorrento green late Saturday night.
Wanneroo 79 (8) vs Warwick 57 (0)
(David Anderson 20 - Glenn Yabuka 14) (Derek Griffin 22 - Sean Wright 10) (Kingsley Toster 20 - Raymond Loran 17) (Pieter Geus 17 - Geoffrey Hinge 16)
Wanneroo slammed the door on Warwick’s promotion hopes, sending them packing with a donut and leaving them destined to finish somewhere between 4th and 6th after showing so much promise earlier in the year.
Griffin picked up the cans over the usually reliable Wright rink by 12, Anderson de-shelled Yabbie by 6, while Geus and Toster both chimed in with tight wins over Hinge and Loran to round out a dominant home performance.
Wanneroo now sit six points clear at the top and a win next week will guarantee themselves a crack at the flag.
Yanchep 99 (7) vs Ellenbrook 47 (1)
(Brody Dix 25 - Josef Rollnik 10) (Callum Arnold 25 - Aaron Cole 11) (Daniel Hartzer 15 - Robert Ball 17) (Teora Turua 34 - Philip Moore 9)
Yanchep did what they’ve done all season – dominate at home – sending the Brook boys back down the highway with everything still to play for next week.
The Rose Brigade will finish the season undefeated at home, which is a phenomenal effort for a newly promoted side. Dix stiffed Rollnik by 15, the division’s top skip Arnold proved far too hot for Cole with a 14-shot win, and Turua picked up the cans in emphatic style, smashing Moore by 25 shots.
Robbie Ball made sure Ellenbrook didn’t go home completely empty-handed with a win over Hatrzer.
Yanchep will be heading up a division next season – congratulations to the Rose Brigade on a sensational first campaign. Meanwhile Ellenbrook must win next week if they want to avoid automatic relegation.
