R4 brought some of the first major upsets with away sides grabbing the chocs. The Bay head back to the top of the table with the 3 home track bullies sitting in the top 3, goes to show the growing advantage of having of been able to create an unique home surface which other sides find challenging. Hard to see this change for the rest of the season.
Osborne Park 66 (2) vs North Perth 74 (6)
(John Berecz 18 - Anthony Kay 20) (Mark Rollings 16 - Mark Barrett 14) (Neville Stevens 24 - Len Caistor 16) (Pamela Chalmers 8 - Todd Hampshire 24)
The new kids on the block are producing the results in the early rounds. Sitting 5th but the Saints had the double header so they’ll likely be at 4th after R5. Albeit beaten the bottom side they still needed to execute & they did.
The Saints ain’t marching into anything but a snake slide to 1 Blue. The rolled the dice on the big Friday night double header but failed to show with Rollings rink just not firing when it mattered at home leaving them 1 from 5 with cracks appearing. Similar woes for Caistor now running a duck egg from 4 but did contain Stevens enough to let the Hampster run riot on Chalmers by 16 shots & prevented them getting off single figures at home.
Pioneers are tracking great. The Saints are halfway through what should be the purple patch of the season with 4pts from 16, they’ve a week off to practice for R6 & they’ll need it.
Result: North Perth 6 - 2
Prediction: Osborne Park 6 - 2
Victoria Park Carlisle 72 (2) vs Manning 73 (6)
(Geoffrey White 16 - Adam Macpherson 20) (Lee Such 18 - Alan Heal 18) (Michael Simms 19 - William Fraser 16) (Ric Gilbert 19 - Paul Smith 19)
What a nail biter, 2 draws, a 3 shot win one way & a 4 shot win the other way to leave a minimum margin of 1 shot in the difference. Right down to the last bowl on this one, cracking game but not going the Reds way as they continue the struggle to find a win.
Manning did incredibly well to back up the Friday night double header at Ossy Pk for R5 & head over to Vic Pk the next day. 12pts in 24hrs isn’t a bad result with a week off this weekend. The Reds showed similar form the last year, close but no cigar. The Reds do have a softish next few weeks but they’ll need to convert because 2026 wil be a tougher finish for them.
(Andrew Garlick 16 - Steven Novak 14) (James Buchanan 12 - Craig Stokes 20) (James Groves 17 - Beau McGrechan 21) (Matt Sharrett 11 - Matthew Allen 28)
The Dolphins dropped a big one here which puts them 1 from 4 and in some early trouble. They just don’t seem to be clicking this season. Garlick had a close win over Novak but Allen strolled past Sharrett & Stokes had Jimmy struggling to close the margin all day.
Yes the Kats had a good chance heading up the freeway but they surely weren’t thinking of a ~30 shot margin against a side considered for Finals. Kats are 1pt off top spot & cruising without having to get through too many gears.
(Dwayne Wooltorton 28 - Paul Butler 13) (Frank Carbone 16 - Michael Sweeney 24) (Wayne Olive 20 - Gavin Crosthwaite 13) (William Brandsma 13 - Mark Douthie 16)
The Cougars are the only side on 2 wins as the rest run away on 3 wins or more. They certainly don’t wish to be sitting on 1 win so this was a big home Agg to get the season moving.
Sweeney had Carbone by 8 shots given the Beach Boys a great start but Wayne pulled 7 back of Gav & it was back close to square again. Then came the matchup everyone wanted with Bill v Douthie, 2 top skips but it was 3 shot win for Douthie to go 4-0 on skippers ladder with only 2 others unbeaten after R4. Wooly roared back saving the Agg for the home side in a big 15 shot win over Butler to grab the chocs. North Beach remain in top 4 so they’ll be fine with 2pts.
(Chris Carruthers 23 - Terry Cranswick 20) (Graeme Smith 23 - Mark Robertson 16) (Grant Taylor 19 - Mitchell Cranswick 20) (Stephen Hide 24 - Lisa Featherby 16)
These sides do keep it close & this was no exception with it close across all rinks. The Bay grabbed a big 7pts & are enjoying life at the top of the table. It’ll be hard to not see them remain their for most of the season.
Carruthers had Cranswick by 3, but Cranswick junior replied with the minimum margin over Taylor to grab the only point of the day. Smith took Robinson by 7 & the top skip gave the feather a little ‘hiding’ to round out a great Agg for the bay & leaves Hide unbeaten on atop of the skippers ladder. 1 from 4 for Mossies is starting to concern a few so they’ll next month will be huge.
Result: Safety Bay 7 - 1
Prediction: Safety Bay 7 - 1
