South West Bowling League - Ladies Div 1 - Brunswick 62 def Eaton Gold 51
BRUNSWICK
Thought I'd let you know that the Brunswick ladies have won the first division pennant flag, playing in the South west league. It is the first time they have won this since the inception of playing finals ( maybe about 11 years). Over the past two years, about 9 ladies have joined the club as novices and two of these ladies were a part of the winning pennant side. We also have a second division team as well with many of those novices filling places in that team too.
Every Monday during the pennant season we have been running training/ coaching sessions. They are not compulsory but many of our pennant players and newer bowlers have been coming and the results are speaking for themselves.
After 15 years of travelling to play at Mosman park, I made the decision to return to my roots, the club where I started playing bowls , at Brunswick. It's been a great transition for me, apart from the no travelling as often up the freeway , I've been able to impart much of the knowledge and skills to those who want to listen. Skills that I've acquired from the best in the business like former State coach , Therese Hastings and the many players I've had the privilege of playing with and against in the Premier League and State and over 60 events and squads and teams. Highlights of returning to the country were that I was able to play in Interleague and Interzone events and Country week. I had three new ladies in my Country week team, all three played awesome bowls over the week and had a great time too. Same was for me as a novice . I was taken under the wing of an experienced bowler in Freda Ietto and was exposed to playing in events outside my own club.
Country clubs have so much to offer and meeting up with new and old friends at Country week has been a highlight for me. Meeting players enjoying themselves away from the pressures of everyday life, like those in areas where there's no rain and farming is an everyday struggle.
We met some lovely girls from Trayning who had to return home prior to the singles as they were launching a children's book . Speaking to lots of ladies who mentioned how important it was that Mens Health initiative through bowls is playing a big part in the lives of those in the bush.

4 new skips and 8 changes for Avon will be interesting.
The biggest out being P Fleay, arguably the most important player for Avon over the last 10 years.
The inclusion of Clarke, Ashworth and Coxon brings talent and experience into their squad.
Will be hard to beat.

Good to see Blake Smith back skipping along with Desi M. The back end looks solid but it’s the front end, especially those 2s that will make CW a real threat this year.

Their reserves would make most teams. The 8 carrying the chalk look the goods, but it is the leads of Tenardi, Crees, Walker and Butler that is their strongest line.
OVERALL
Kalgoorlie throws up other challenges and distractions that has been known to affect outcomes.
Avon will start red hot favourites with their recent victories.
Central Wheatbelt will influence the end result by taking some scalps.
East Avon know how to win and have the talent to do it, but for the Phantom it's South Easterns title to take. Last year was derailed by the Vaughan injury, so baring injury should win.
Good luck to all.

RESULTS
The drought was broken by the SEBL winning this years ILRR.12 years between victories, but worth the wait.A star studded lineup that rose to the challenge when pushed.Sharp and France were ruthless and everyone focused on the shield. They could dominate for a few years but the others aren’t far behind.CWBL pinched 3 rinks off Avon and pushed others while Goldfields also had their moments.Avon had their worst result for 15 years but will bounce back.
The Zone side looks solid and good to see Starling and Hart rewarded for several years of good form.
My sources inform me the record for wrongons, previously held by a Goomalling bowler was beaten by another local,WTF or is that UTF?
Well done the Boulder Bowling Club, the reports were glowing.

Best team on paper but it's on the green that it's played. Awesome back end combinations and good to see Shark back in control of a rink. Hard to go past them as favourites for 2023.
OVERALL
Eastern zone won the RR last year not just because they were loaded with talent but because they played as one team not as individual rinks, something the Avon boys have had drilled into them for years.
This year it will be really close and although hard to go past perennial favourites Avon and home town advantage of East Avon.
I think South Eastern looks really strong so should get the job done.

- Dalwallinu Bowling club will be hosting 2023 ILRR commencing Friday lunchtime as always the hospilitatly will be excellent, Dally is well known for its ability to keep the refreshments a plenty readily available with the inexperienced frequently over doing the hydration in Dalwallinu’s temperate climate with unforgettable repercussions new players are encouraged to be cautious.
After a quick review its clear to see all teams have introduced many new players with all squads sprinkled with the usual suspects, good luck to all participants, during the last 10 years Batavia Red have enjoyed the lions share of success winning 8 title with both Batavia White & Central West Coast saluting once each, the 2023 programme listed teams will all no doubt be keen to change the current trend and given conditions will be less than favourable for the Batavia squads, opportunity is for change is certainly at Dalwallinu in 2023.
The local boys from Centrals will enjoy the home ground and demand respect with plenty of Country all stars listed to play with Dally’s Jolly man the rink to watch, the teams appear to have been balanced slightly with local boys set to shine at home.
North Midlands will also enjoy the venue & conditions with plenty of local experience with all players coming out of the current pennant season full of confidence with Wes Benton another skipper in great form his rink will be definitely on the radar.
Central West Coast are always thereabouts and only need a few close games to fall their way and they will be right in it come Sunday lunchtime with the draw see them come home strong, wouldn’t be surprised to see Alfie’s rink enjoy success yet again not much said on his rink they let the bowls do the talking.
Moore Districts look to have the squad to give the shield a real shake, lots of talent and experience here with Gingin star Steve Fewster back in the bush a rink to watch after enjoying the bright lights of City competition, the round 2 clash with Alfie from CWC is a match not to miss.
Batavia squads appear to have been mixed up by the southerly sea-breeze, its rumoured team lists were blown out the door, several new faces appear in the team lists with new players to ILRR going to Dalwallinu to enjoy more sedate conditions ( no wind & it gets hot, M Ford is believed to be taking a second pair of shoes as his last visit saw his soles come off his new slippers)just need to contend with sunny Dally.
Both squads will highly anticipate the Rd 2 Derby with bragging rights the prize.
Reds rink of SGN, Ford, Walton, Adams looking to go back to back the foursome will need to start well with Rd 1 clash with S Beckwith a match to watch closely.
Whites skippers are all in form and looking forward to the challenge none more than Carnarvon’s John DeCastro with his rink Staffy, Harvs, Gav making their debut together another rink to be watched closely.
“The Knight”
PS - Don’t be surprised to see the final result come down to the Rd 5 clash of White & Moore being a decider.

5 talent laden sides will go to battle in Merredin 8th to 10th of January. These are arguably the best 5 side’s I’ve seen line up in my time playing this event East Avon Lots of talent and experience with o60’s champ Bill Fraser leading the charge. Players to watch (PTW). Stinger Griffiths playing 2 and Geoff Main both ooze class Silky Wilkins and Thomson round out 4 quality skips
Goldfields
A professional outfit under the guidance of Joe Kennedy PTW. Watson and Cowcher up front will be hard to beat, with Osmetti playing 2 after dominating last time round.
South Eastern
4 outstanding skippers, and unbelievably depth.Any side that can have Shark and Currie as 2s will be tough to beat. John is one of the best players ever to represent this zone. PTW Vaughan was a stand out in Zone ,as was Butler, playing 3 this
time round. France Sharp and Cooper worth a Squizz
Avon
Always competitive. Honk Schell back in is a good get along with Wayne Butler make up quite a few changes for Avon. PTW Hayden Smith is worth getting a front seat for, young guns Minchin and Carr may impress. Hudson May be their oldest but still one of their best.
Central Wheatbelt
Impressive line up with lots of experience. Capable of going the whole
way this year PTW Ant Ryan is a gun, Blake Smith with Desi M as his 3 with cause grief for the opposition. Usual suspects,Lancaster, Jubes and Smithy round out a good outfit
The Verdict
South Eastern......on rink wins
Good Bowling.

Review of Eastern Zone RR from the Phantom
The Eastern Zone Round Robin hosted by the Merredin BC was one of the most interesting and thrilling ever seen in this zone.
The weather and the conditions were tough, but so were the bowlers as draws and tight aggregates were common place.
Results saw the last round between East Avon and Avon a winner takes all result.
Avon limped into the final with consecutive aggregates of 4 shots and then a thrilling 1 shot win over Central Wheatbelt with the rink of H Smith picking up a 3 on the last end.
East Avon didn’t get everything easy but looked in better form.
But alas, the last end saw East Avon 3 shots up with the rinks of Jones v Fraser and Schell v Thompson each with 1 bowl to play and Avon holding 2 shots on each rink.
Thompson narrowly missed his shot and Jones didn’t need to play his last bowl.
Avon win by 1 shot, again.
So, the Phantom gets it wrong when he tipped the SEBL and by saying Hudson was Avon’s oldest player when it was Wolfenden.
Congrats to the Zone players selected for Busselton.
