A huge weekend of bowls awaits us all with a double header this weekend. I expect that we will have some very tired players come Sunday afternoon. Let’s have a quick look at matches to be played over the weekend:
Safety Bay v Cockburn
Safety Bay
Peter Gilkinson, Tadeusz Bochat, Paul Imrie, Raymond Clark
Barry Shackles, Brett Duffield, Geoffrey Burgess, Ron Hall
David Smith, Paul Daynes, Scott Gallon, Steven Adams
Lynne Brodie, Anthony Ballard, Bruno McVicar, Raymond Kennedy INS: Gilkinson OUTS: Capewell
Cockburn
Giuseppi Reale, Denis Bandy, Kelli Wray, Paul Brotherston
Viktor Dropulic, Greg Collier, Giuseppi Galipo, Mark (Sydney) Game
Hal Chambers, Ian Coyne, John Wray, James Wylie
Tom King, Robin Gowland, Stephen McGill, Brett Parker INS: Bandy OUTS: Ward
Safety Bay with a first up win away from home in round 1 whilst Cockburn suffering a shock home defeat. I think Safety Bay will smell blood in this one with there first home match of the season and Cockburn in the past really struggling away from home. What a start to the season it would be for the promoted Safety Bay if they could go 2 zip and I am tipping them to do just that. Cockburn will try hard but can’t see them doing enough to get the points.
Safety Bay 6-2
Dalkeith Nedlands v South Perth
Dalkeith Nedlands
Michael Joyce, Todd Allen, Michael Zusman, Michael Yates
Rob Kelly, Simon Gazia, Rob Moran, Darren Redeckis
Peter Jeanes, David Fitzgerald, Mark Lindsay, Jesse Brown
Jeffrey Irwin, John McCormack, Matthew Green, Martin Saunders INS: Allen, McCormack OUTS: Foster, Gryta
South Perth
Geoffrey Bovell, Max Petrich, Farley Anderson, Steve Kelly
John Terrell, Lisa Brannan, John Carter, Robert Urquhart
Kenneth Pride, Michael McRae, Tony Percival, Wayne Bezant
Otto Dawson, David Reagan, Gregory Reagan, Neale Griffin INS: McRae, D Reagan OUTS: Bennett, Mortley
Dalkeith notoriously slow starters to the season and they won’t be helped by the absence of experienced players Alek Gryta and Andrew Foster this weekend. South Perth got their season off to a great start in Round 1 with a strong win at home. They have experience on every line with household names including star leads like former Wesley college star Ken Pride, Otto Dawson, Geoff Bovell and John Terrell. They are going to be a tough proposition for any team this season built around a quality front end. Dalkeith did sneak 2 points away at Willetton in what was a pretty good start to the season. A very tough one to call but I think South Perth might have the momentum and think they could sneak a valuable away win.
Gosnells
Kevin Cragan, Larry Paterson, Maureen Cooney, -
David Bradbury, Kerry Cunynghame, Mark Beauchamp, Rue Bishop
Ian Quayle, Ronald McKay, Peter Gale, Michael Sharpe
Nicolaas Vanderplank, Trevor Auckland, Michael Rickard, Brett Holland INS: Cunynghame, Gale OUTS: Lawrence, Gahan, Ashman
A big game here with both teams defeated in Round 1. Rossmoyne much stronger at home and they will start favourites in this one. With Mayor Lang leading from the front as usual backed up by his capable deputy Reza Vind now playing in the skipper’s chair they should be up and about early. Gosnells defeated at home in Round 1 and clearly not the start that they were looking for. They will look to bounce back but expect Rossmoyne to be too strong at home.
Armadale
David Newton, Anthony Monson, Daniel Newton, Kevin McKay
Paul Thomas, Timothy Bell, Chadd Hunt, Eddie Gollan
Trevor Southern, Nicholas Lewis, Belinda Lehman, Stewart Gosstray
Doddy Innes, Hugh McKay, Cameron Wilson, Daniel Brown INS: Dan Newton, Brown OUTS: Shean, Mackay
Clearly our match of the round and would be nice to be able to see both teams before making a few comments. Armadale our pre season favourites but this will be a serious test for them away at Kardinya. Always very tricky to defeat Kardinya at home and I expect them to come out all guns blazing on Saturday. I like the look of the Kardinya back end with 4 quality skips but this will be a real test for them against the Mckay family and Mr Gosstray. Another tough one to tip but favour Armadale in a close match.
Armadale 6-2
Rockingham v Willetton
Rockingham
Keith Fyles, Tony Threlfall, Lindsay Atkins, Marcus Simpson
Ivan Wright, Lance Parkhill, Stephen Mulhall, Bradley Cole
Steven Wales, Victor Arriagada, Pietro Villa, Mark Devenny
Malcolm Wilson, Terry Rubery, Graeme Roberts, Bruce Edwards INS: No change OUTS:
Willetton
Rhonda Porter, Peter Bartoshefski, David Reynolds, Cameron Girvan
Peter McSweeney, Mervyn Binning, Ken Monkhouse, Alan Walters
Nicholas Rogers, Mick Phillips, Trevor Thompson, Justin Wright
John Porter, Barry Baker, Michael Brooks, Gavin Dodge INS: McSweeney OUTS: Calyun
Another very interesting game. Rockingham looking to improve from last season and underway in Round 1 with a great win away from home. Willetton are sneaky good and won’t go down without a fight. Would love to see the two top skippers in Simpson and Girvan go head to head in what would be a great contest. Another tight match on paper but with the addition of quality skipper Brad Cole into the Rockingham side this season I expect that Rockingham will be too strong at home.
